  • Can get monotonous

Altos Adventure is an endless snowboarding game that was released in 2015. The game is available on limited platforms, with the most success coming from iOS and Android. One of my favourite aspects of this game is its surreal gameplay. This is a big change from the usual high octane noisy snowboarding games that we are usually accustomed to. My Altos Adventure Review is finally here and it marks the release of its sequel, Altos Odyssey.

Altos Adventure Review

In this game, you play Alto, a snowboarder who chases after lamas that have escaped from his farm. Collecting lamas give you points and collecting gold coins increases the game currency that can be used to buy upgrades. Yes, Altos Adventure is an endless runner, but in this game, you are the one doing the chasing most of the time.

The gameplay is very simple and works just fine for one-handed use. This is due to the simple touch controls. One quick tap to jump, then touch and hold the screen while in the air to perform a backflip. And that is about it! If you strategically time your jumps and backflips, you will be able to land on areas in which you can perform a grind.

These continuous tricks will boost up your trick score. It will also boost up your flight suit which can be purchased as an upgrade. But be warned, it is expensive and takes time to build up enough cash to buy a flight suit. I suggest you don’t buy anything when starting out and just save up for the flight suit.

Graphics

This is the games strong suit and it is what made this indie game a hit. The minimalistic yet fluid style of Altos Adventure is breathtaking and blissful. This is a game that will have you playing over and over just to enjoy the scenery. There aren’t that many changes to the 2D landscape of this game. Except for the subtle transitions from day to night and the various weather patterns.

The entire experience of Altos Adventure is as monotonous as any other runner. But the big difference here is that the experience isn’t aggravating. It is a calm and serene one that the player will want to enjoy over and over. Unlocking the wingsuit will give you an extra layer of gameplay in the sky. You will be able to do insane jumps of mountains, backflip into your wingsuit, then glide and backflip onto a cable and grind your way back to the ground.

Beautifully minimalist and evocative visual design

Should You Play This Game?

I highly recommend it. Alto’s adventure has received wide critical acclaim for its relaxed style of gameplay and exquisite graphics. It is a lovely game to wind down and relax to at the end of the day. I have been playing this game constantly for a few years now on iOS. The great news is that you will be able to save your progress on iCloud.
