They have finally gone ahead and made a sequel to that cool Sci-Fi movie from the 80’s. Warner Bros recently announced this by releasing a clip that they would call the Blade Runner 2049 Teaser. It does seem more of a trailer to me, but it can also still just go down as being a really cool and well-done teaser.
Blade Runner 2049 Teaser
I’m loving this Blade Runner 2049 Teaser Trailer a lot! The subtle yet powerful visuals and score just did it for me. I am a huge fan of Gosling’s other subtle yet intense movie Drive. This teaser has visual and audio cues that are similar to that movie. It has that 80’s Sci-Fi movie look which is sweetly complimented by that old school 80’s synth score. I really feel like I have been transported back into the Blade Runner Neo-Noir Sci-Fi world. Ryan Gosling is a perfect fit for this role because he has been in so many other weird artsy movies like this.
Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard for this movie so shortly after reprising his role as Han Solo in The Force Awakens is also such a good opportunity well taken. I like how the story in this teaser is also aligned to real life timing which is more than 30 years after the original movie.
There is actually not much at all in terms of premise available. But what we do know is that the movie is set 30 years after the first movie. LAPD Officer K, played by Gosling, has uncovered something that will send society towards chaos. He needs the help of former LAPD Officer Rick Deckard, played by Ford, in order to fight against this threat. Officer K seems to be really good at what he does because of not only his initial findings but the fact that he has also found Officer Deckard, who has been missing for 30 years!
Will It Be Any Good?
Sir Ridley Scott has invested a lot of money and time into this project. Director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he has been using mostly practical effects when filming this movie. This is an approach inspired by J.J. Abrams who did the same when working on The Force Awakens. The Cinematographer, Roger Deakins, has worked with Denis Villeneuve on Sicario before and the brilliant James Bond movie Skyfall.
The casting seems to be on point at the moment with Ana de Armas, Jared Leto, and Dave Bautista joining the list of actors for this movie. There isn’t much info on their roles at the moment, but I did find a cool interview with Bautista who discusses a few things about filming this movie.
Blade Runner 2049 is expected to be released on October 6, 2017
Blade Runner 1982
Now, this trailer really takes you back down memory lane! I was part of the cult that watched the original Blade Runner on VHS when growing up in the 80’s. Although I felt it wasn’t as good as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Running Man at the time. I did enjoy watching it a few years ago. It really does hold up especially if you watch it in HD. It is one of those movies which has a great reveal and twist at the ending. This makes you think harder to the point where you just have to re-watch this movie knowing the ending. A true Sci-Fi classic that was ahead of its time back then.
Many have criticized the movie for its pacing. Yeah, it is really slow at times! But it is how most noir movies are, with the primary focus being on the Main Plot and not on the action. It’s also a Sci-Fi Thriller that came after a Star Wars Movie. Even the director at the time, Ridley Scott, was just of his success Alien movie. So the pace of this movie was drastically different in relation to those other movies which set the Sci-Fi standard at the time. The set pieces and effects were also revolutionary at the time.

Alcon Entertainment and Oculus will partner up to create a Blade Runner 2049 VR Experience. We have seen before when a VR experience is used to promote a movie. I loved the VR Experience for The Conjuring 2 movie. The only difference is that the Blade Runner 2049 VR Experience will probably be exclusive to Oculus.
