Nokia 8110 – The Banana Matrix Phone is Back!

Nokia had a good exhibition going at this year’s Mobile World Congress event out in Barcelona. They unveiled two great Android Oreo smartphones, namely, the Nokia 7 Plus and the Nokia 8 Sirocco. But there was another Nokia phone that made heads turn as well at the event. That phone is the Nokia 8110, an updated version of an old-school classic smartphone.

Nokia had stirred up some great publicity last year when they released an update of another classic, the Nokia 3310. It seems like they plan to do the same here with the 8810, a smartphone that featured in the original Matrix movie back in 1999.

The Nokia 8110 is as simple and as minimal as you can get. Actually, that was the 3310, now the 8110 has a few extra added features. An active slider for instance that turns the bright coloured screen on once you slide it open. You also get 4G on this smartphone to allow you to browse the web and apps faster. You can also turn the phone into a wireless hotspot. All of this is made possible by KaiOS, a minimal operating system that can run HTML 5 apps such as Facebook and Google Maps.

The KaiOS along with the 8110 Snapdragon 205 processor will get you around 9 hours of talk time. Nokia has also promised around 25 days of standby time on a single charge.

So should you rush out and get a Nokia 8110? Who is this device for? The stripped down features and retro styling may not be enough to make you want this phone. But the idea of over 3 weeks of battery life sounds great. Another thing that can be great is if the 8110 can add support for Whatsapp, seeing that Facebook and Twitter can run on the device. Most people, including myself, mostly make calls over WhatsApp.

Nokia currently does not have an answer, when asked if the Nokia 8110 will eventually receive Whatsapp. I can see myself using this to make and take my long daily WhatsApp calls.
