Synaptics has developed an In-Glass Fingerprint Reader. The worlds first. This allows you to unlock your smartphone simply by placing your finger at the required area on the screen. The name that Synaptics has given this technology is Clear ID. Let’s take a look at the video below and see if this is something that can be implemented in future smartphones.

This In-Glass Fingerprint Reader is actually an optical sensor. The type of sensor that you will find in a camera. It requires light to view your fingerprint. This sensor will only work on OLED panels. The time that this sensor takes to verify your fingerprint is actually as fast as 1 to 1 and a half seconds. This is absolutely impressive for a concept first generation product.
This is great news for the future of smartphones. One of the reasons is that all the big companies are shrinking the bezels on their smartphones. This allows zero room for a fingerprint scanner. Most smartphones like the LG G6 placed their scanners at the back of the phones. Apple removed the fingerprint scanner completely with the iPhone X. And so did LG with the LG Q6. Both of these smartphones use facial recognition as the main source of authentication.
So the use of an In-Glass Fingerprint Reader can be very useful in the future. Especially for companies like Apple and Samsung who make use of OLED technology. I don’t see this scanner making it to that many devices this year because it is so new. Its pretty unlikely Samsung will jump on the bandwagon with the Samsung S9 reveal around the corner. But Apple, OnePlus, and Google may have a chance of getting this tech into their smartphones towards the end of 2018.
